A friend in my Creative Concept class was telling me about the latest speaker they had come to her Perspectives in Communication Design class. His name is Chris Guillebeau, and his vision is pretty interesting. He's all about breaking out of the mold that is expected of you and experiencing life the way you want to. I got a little bit of the self help vibe while I went through his website and blog, but there were a few interesting things that stood out to me ...
First, he describes why he started writing ... 1) I felt I had something important to say. 2) I wanted to transition from helping a few people on an individual basis to helping more people through a broader platform. 3) I wanted to sleep at night.
#3 is the one that gets me. I think some of my best ideas come to me while I'm trying to fall asleep. I've learned to keep a notebook close by for those very moments.
Secondly, he wants to visit every country in the world by April 7, 2013. He's got 43 more countries to go. I have a goal of visiting all 50 states (I've been to 28 so far), but maybe I should up my ante.
Third, he interacts with his readers. He posted the following two questions and has asked people to send in their answers on a postcard. What do you really want to get out of life? What can you offer the world that no one else can? It's pretty interesting to see what others have to say. What would your answers be?
Wow-this guy is really inspiring! Last night at work the Animal's song "It's my life and I'll do what I want..." was on which sparked a conversation b/w my co-worker and I about how we would like to live our lives like that but find ourselves succumbing to decisions based on financial obligations. I think somewhere in life there's a balance and that once you find your path it all falls into place (or so I hope).
ReplyDeleteI like his traveling philosophy too-it's really important to expand your mind as far as you can in this life, and experiencing different cultures and ways of living is the easiest and most profound way of doing that, I think.
